Columbia Ampli-Dry Waterproof Shell Jacket: a light shell that pulls its weight

Columbia's Omni-Tech waterproof material is a clever alternative to Gore-Tex. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
Omni-Tech combines a highly breathable membrane with a tough exterior, in this case ripstop nylon, to make the whole package more durable. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
Traditional waterproof textiles, like Gore-Tex, use ePTFE, which is adept at shedding moisture but isn’t particularly stretchy. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
But here, we could really feel the stretch when we pulled the jacket around, it’s almost lycra-like and offers a great athletic fit for a range of activities. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
We loved the fact that the Ampli-Dry didn’t rustle nearly as much as its Gore-Tex counterparts. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
However, the hood packed some serious creasing, which lead us to believe the jacket might go the same way if shoved into a backpack. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
The Columbia Ampli-Dry Shell Jacket is a very solid outer for a great price. The membrane technology is excellent and it makes a fantastic layering option. (image credit: The Gear Loop)
