(The Gear Loop) - Polar has introduced a raft of updates to its popular Grit X outdoor multi-sport watch that it hopes will allow its athletes to "pursue true adventure” and to give its potential customers a few additional reasons to purchase a Polar over the likes of Garmin, Suunto and Casio.

The Grit X line has now been extended to include a Pro version, which retails at £439 (some £60 more than the standard version) and includes upgrades to the casing, ensuring it is more durable. In fact, Polar says the Grit X Pro is designed for heavy-duty use and has been tested against military standards (MIL-STD-810G), water-resistant up to 100 meters, and built to withstand temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Battery life remains largely the same as the Grit X model at 40 hours of training time, but also offers, 100 hours using power-saving options and up to seven days in watch mode with 24/7 tracking.

In order to appeal to a more outdoors-focused audience, the Grit X Pro also has an option for an always-on outdoor watch face, showing barometric-based altimeter, location coordinates, sunrise/sunset times and compass information. Route and elevation profiles are also new, with turn-by-turn guidance from Komoot providing the ups and downs of a journey and the TrackBack feature reversing your route automatically.

On top of this, users can track energy usage and get smart fuel reminders during extra-long sessions using the FuelWise smart fuelling assistant, plus there is data and suggestions on recovery times based on the most recent activities.

Available in Nordic Copper, Black DLC and Arctic Gold, it looks like an altogether more premium offering than the standard Polar Grit X, perhaps taking a leaf out of the Garmin Fenix range when its comes to appealing to a more high-end audience.

The very pinnacle of the new Grit range is the X Pro Titan, which is 12 per cent lighter than any other Grit model thanks to the use of ultra-strength, aerospace titanium for the casing. It also comes with two wristbands: a premium, waterproof FKM band and a perforated leather band for those everyday moments. It retails at £519, should you be feeling particularly flush.
