(The Gear Loop) - Blundstone has been manufacturing no-nonsense work boots from its hometown in Hobart, Tasmania since 1870 and, a bit like Ugg in Australia, has become world renowned for producing hardy, comfortable footwear that excels in everything from everyday farm work to an impromptu hike through backcountry or tip to a remote beach for a solo cold water surf session.
The company has teamed up with environmentally-conscious British surf and outdoor brand Finisterre to produce an exclusive and entirely vegan-friendly version that bears the hallmarks of both brands.
Working together - but presumably remotely - between Finisterre’s clifftop workshop in St. Agnes and Blundstone’s base in the heart of Tasmania, Blundstone were able to call on knowledge gained from Finisterre’s past footwear collaborations with Vans, Palladium and Vivobarefoot.
The key changes here are found in the pull loop, the upper, the footbed and the sole, all of which are fashioned from fully vegan verified materials, an important step for Finisterre, which is aiming to shake up the clothing and wetsuit industry by using fabrics that reduce harm on the planet.
Key features of the unique boot include a comfort-focused removeable footbed, which can be cleaned and dried when necessary, a durable outsole and water resistant microfibre upper with abrasion-proof qualities for long-lasting comfort. Of course, you’ll fine a sneaky Finisterre logo debossed (embossing is too simple for these guys) onto each heel so those who know… know.
"We’ve dreamt of working with Blundstone for years. The durability is second to none and they look great on everyone, so it’s no wonder the majority of our community own a pair. For us we needed a boot that passed the same quality and toughness test but maintained our pioneering approach of innovation and seeking alternates to what has gone before. Something just as durable, breathable, water-repellent and with no animal derived ingredients and all packaged into that famous boot silhouette? Consider it done," says Finisterre’s lead menswear designer, Todd.
The very simple unisex style boot will retail for £160/$216USD/€180 and come in two equally straightforward colours: black & olive and brown & black. They are exclusively abailable through the Finisterre website.
