(The Gear Loop) - Battling the rain is a cyclist’s worst nightmare. There’s nothing more disheartening than riding directly into a storm as giant blobs of precipitation cause cycling jerseys to cling to the skin, the core temperature to drop and the mood to turn sour.
Rapha aims to help avoid this situation by adding to its current Gore-Tex ShakeDry range with two new options in the Pro Team range, covering both men’s and women’s styles and offering an insulated version.
Both are made with recycled synthetics that provide weather protection and extra durability. For packability, the new Pro Team Gore-Tex Rain Jacket is made with the lightest three-layer waterproof fabric in the Gore-Tex family, while the Insulated Gore-Tex Rain Jacket incorporates an insulated liner for additional warmth.
For those who like to steer clear of the overly cloying, performance-orientated products, Rapha has added a stylish Gore-Tex Field Coat that pairs a waterproof outer shell with a detachable insulated liner made from recycled synthetics. According to Rapha, the Field Coat is a "performance-driven take on the iconic military field jacket, designed to be used both on and off the bike," featuring a three-layer Gore-Tex outer for the ultimate in water-proofing properties.
The short-sleeve, quilted liner locks in heat but can be buttoned out and worn separately, extending the temperature range of the shell when worn by itself. You can also unzip the hood and pack it away into the collar to save on bulk, while three cargo flap pockets are also fully waterproof, keeping essentials protected and dry. The Field Coat costs £495/$675/€590.
The highly packable Pro Team Gore-Tex Rain Jacket weighs just 84gsm and can easily be stuffed into a pocket, but offers improved durability for off-road or gravel rides over the company’s existing ShakeDry products due to the use of hardier Gore-Tex Active fabrics. These are set to cost £195/$270/€230 and will be available in Dark Navy/White and Teal/Peach.
An insulated versions of the Pro Team Gore-Tex Jacket will cost slightly more, with a RRP of £260/$355/€310 and everything is available from the Rapha website.
