(The Gear Loop) - It was only a matter of time before Mercedes-Benz treated its electric EQV van to the camper treatment and we can happily reveal that the results are glorious... if a tad expensive.
Hot off the heels of the much smaller Citan, the bods at Merc teamed up with Swiss motorhome and camper conversion specialists Sortimo to come up with a modular, solar panel-infused concept that takes sustainability and environmentally-friendly motorhome touring to the next level.
Using an EQV as a base, Sortimo added a pop-up roof with bespoke roof bed, as well as a multifunction box with additional bed and kitchen unit that’s cleverly stashed in the luggage compartment at the rear of the van.
According to Mercedes, the kitchen unit uses a drawer system that includes a sink, a two-ring removable gas cooking stove, a refrigerator box and drawers for cutlery, cooking utensils and supplies. The bed system is installed above the kitchen unit. This can be unfolded in a few simple steps to create a bed that is precisely tailored to the vehicle width of the EQV.
The designers behind the clever modular camping system were told to keep an eye on weight, as every additional kilo added will have an adverse effect on the EQV’s range and efficiency. As a reminder, the EQV comes in two different battery variants: the EQV 300 with a 90 kWh battery and a range of 326‑363km (202-225-miles) according to WLTP testing cycle, and the EQV 250 with a 60 kWh battery and a range of 213-236km (132-146-miles).
With this in mind, Sortimo used the lightest materials possible to produce a system that can easily be folded away, allowing the rear seats to be used unencumbered when travelling between destinations.
There’s also the option to add two solar panels to the pop-up roof with a total output of around 400 watts, which can charge a leisure battery for powering and charging household items.
Although the EQV is available to buy in the UK and Europe now, the availability of camper conversions at dealership level will be limited to region. Plus, with prices starting at £71,645 for the EQV 300 Sport mode, it's going to be an expensive way to travel.
However, there are plenty of aftermarket converters out there that would be happy to get stuck in if you've got deep enough pockets.
